In 2016, DOL provided State Apprenticeship Expansion (SAE) grants to 36 states and 1 territory to grow apprenticeship. Grantees are using funds in three critical ways:

  • To deepen business engagement
  • To build and diversify the pipeline of apprentices
  • To integrate apprenticeship into states’ broader workforce development, economic development, and educational systems.

This Resource Page showcases innovative strategies to expand business engagement from Idaho, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

  • Idaho – Redesigned their business outreach model to bring together workforce, education, and sector intermediary partners, and equipped them to adopt a consultative sales model focused around business needs and customized solutions.
  • Michigan – A local Workforce Board built on its sector work with regional healthcare employers and community colleges to facilitate collaboration on a one-year Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program, with the Workforce Board as the apprenticeship sponsor.
  • Wisconsin – Launched a state LEADERs campaign to recruit businesses and others as champions to promote apprenticeship and advance innovative models with their peers.
